Our sales wanted to test pushing videos on social media to ramp up acquisition efforts after finding success with the social carousels I created. I initially made 16:9 and 1:1 videos for the top 10 markets to test, and then scaled the production to be able to create these for our remaining markets.
When the McClatchy website was being redesigned, leadership wanted to be able to display a map of our markets to demonstrate the reach across the United States. They requested to show our regions, the markets within as well as provide links to the detail pages of each market. This responsive interactive map, which is still in use, was the culmination of their requests.
The News & Observer had a sponsored holiday baking section, and we wanted to make an online presentation that acted as a landing page for the collection of stories and photos that ran in print. This interactive presentation had customized views for tablet and mobile, and each story had links embedded to return them back to the landing page.
After the success of the holiday baking guide, we began creating more interactive presentation portals for some of our seasonal sections, including the spring arts preview, which is a section that features a large number of listings for various events. Each story contained in the section had embedded links to return to the main page and was built with responsive views for tablet and mobile.
This interactive presentation was not treated as a portal like the previous sections – Best Restaurants of 2016 was a contained presentation where all of the stories were embedded within it. By doing this, we were able to include links to the restaurants’ websites in all of the rankings, and all of the accompanying features of the main story highlighting the restaurant of the year. Links to pdfs of the printed pages were added within the story page to accommodate readers who may not have been able to interact with the feature or had accessibility issues.
As the online features editor for The News & Observer, I saw an opportunity to create a themed interactive template to display reviews of new movies opening weekly. Our reviews, especially local ones, usually drew decent readership, so I took the initiative to create a slider template that was easy to update on a weekly basis. The presentation included the movie summary and clickthrough link to the review. Each review also had embedded links to return to the presentation.
